I'm crazy about all the energetic prints and patterns! What a great spring inspiration editorial. Also, I'm really happy that Sasha is doing print work again. She's fabulous. 

Part Noveau: Lilah Ramzi Shows How Fashion Photography Recycles Ideas

Being the fashion photography buff that I am, I love fashion historian Lilah Ramzi's blog. Titled Part Noveau, the blog puts past and future photographs and garments side by side to show how the industry recycles ideas in fashion design and photography, and how it draws inspiration from the past. Here are some of my favorite examples. (Love the Audrey Hepburn references the most)

Would You Dare To Wear Peplum Hems? (I Would!)

I distinctly remember seeing this spread in Vogue and thinking "No, definitely not, peplums are weird, way too girly, and totally not for me." They're just too frilly and romantic, (That's honestly what they are- frills.) and honestly, I don't feel like participating in this trend. Peplums just seemed pointless to me. I didn't understand them. Well, even though these points are valid, I didn't have a change of heart until I was browsing H&M's e-store and I found THIS.

I was ooing and ahhing over it when I stopped and thought "Woah, wait, this is a peplum hem. And I like it." Different from the ones in spreads and on the spring runways... it's wearable! Hallelujah! Peplum hems don't have to be extreme, it's just not practical. But a hem like this? I could wear it all the time. I totally plan on marching over to my H&M the moment I get my paycheck and adding this little beauty to my closet. I think it would look cute with a pencil skirt, wouldn't you agree?
So, the big question, would you wear a peplum hem?

Happy Thanksgiving from The Girl In The Check Scarf!  I have been helping my mom cook all day, and I'm totally not the cooking type (I once made cupcakes and forgot to add flour. Like I said. So not the cooking type.) I'm just grateful I haven't burned the house down (yet). It's been very interesting day. My dog ate half the apple pie crust my mom was working on, there's a very intimidating sixteen-pound  turkey sitting in my fridge, and I need to wake up at 3am tomorrow so that I can see the Macy's Thanksgiving parade. With all that being said, have a fantastic turkey day!

Visiting Oscar de le Renta- The Office

Today's post is the third and final installment of my Oscar de la Renta shots (sad face). I'm so excited to show you a little bit of the office! 

A gorgeous illustration in Oscar's office. Also, can you see just some of the hundreds of books in his library? I was dying. All the fashion and art books I have ever wanted in one place.

In the sewing room, the ladies tack up pictures of dresses, as well as shots of their family and grandchildren. Erika pointed this out to me; a picture of Jesus and a picture of Oscar right beside it. "I don't try to understand the symbolism behind this" she said. I don't really get it either. But it makes me smile nonetheless.

On The Topic Of Fashion's Night Out...

I recently received this email from a very good friend of mine/ fellow blogger and it made me smile.  I love this girl to death!


Justine-

 I was reading September Vogue and Teen Vogue and they both had major articles on Fashion's Night Out a.k.a the coolest shopping trip you'll (or I'll) ever have. A few of the people who are going to be there? Hmmm, let's see. Oh yeah! Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang, Tavi Gevinson. And more.

 Annd Alice + Olivia are holding a Cinderella-type contest and one lucky girl will win a chance to walk the runway of their spring show. WHICH COULD BE YOU. It won't be me because I am elf-sized and am also a klutz who will end up falling off the runway and onto Anna Wintour. But you could and should do it. I mean, you're 15! American Apparel is having a factory sale, a musical performance by Karen Elson at the Balenciaga store on 542 West 22 Street btw. 10th and 11th Aves, and Barneys is hosting the mother of all fashion events:


 thou shalt mingle with fashion icons like the rodarte sisters and alexander wang! and tavi shall be shopping and you shall talk to her and compliment her on her red hair and whatever she's wearing! annnnnd there will be ping-pong (yes, ping-pong!), musical chairs, and meet and greet with supermodels and whatnot.

 You, Justine Guy, must make a solemn vow to attend said event and kiss Alexander Wang on both cheeks. AND you must tell Tavi that your web-bestie Bella is sad that she couldn't come. BUT MOSTLY YOU HAVE TO GO BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BE A FASHION'S NIGHT OUT ATTENDER. And also so you can post pics on your blog. And also because the whole night is for charity. And also because the likes of Karlie Kloss, Sasha Pivovarova, and Chanel Iman told you to! Just go to http://fashionsnightout.com/ and watch their plea!

 I actually burst into tears when my mom told me that I couldn't go. Actually, the conversation went something like this:

 ME: Hey mama, did you hear about Fashion's Night Out?
 MOM: Oh yeah, I read about it in Vogue. 
 ME: Wouldn't it be amazing if we went?
 MOM: To New York City? That's way too expensive! And where would we leave Diego (my younger brother)? I guess we could ask Ricardo (my godfather/fashion photographer...not kidding 'bout the godfather part or the fashion photographer part) if we could stay with him, but he works like...six jobs.
 ME: Mama, Tavi lives in Chicago and she's going to be there. At Barney's.
 MOM: Honey, Tavi has people to fly her places.
 ME: ERG! *Bursts into tears*
 MOM: Oh, don't cry sweetie! (Gives me hug.)
 ME: But I can't miss this! It's like, the coolest event EVER!!!!!!!! 
 

 The convo goes on for another fifteen minutes until I retreat to my bedroom to angrily cut things out of said Vogueand sob over Lula which I wouldn't dare cut things out of.

 She doesn't have a problem with going, not at all. She actually liked the idea. But we have nowhere to stay and hotels are expensive. But if you go and send me some pics that would make me feel better.

 And if that doesn't happen, I can always turn to Style Rookie for behind-the-scenes pics and whatnot.

Understated

There's something to be said about baisic non frilly dressing. Sometimes the best outfits are simple ones. (please note that sweat pants and Uggs don't count as elegant simplicity. sorry.)

Just as an incredibly random side note, I have been having the weirdest dreams lately. I dreamed that I got into a bus, then I turned around and who else but Kate Lanpher  . Then what I said was some thing like "omgosh... you... you're...Kate...Elle....fantastic hair...I love you". I'm a total Kate fan. Then right behind Kate was who else but the editor of French Vogue, Carine Rotifeld. I was totally freaking out, it was the best thing ever. Right behind Carine was some people from the American Vogue staff like Hamish Bowles and a couple other people... Then I realized that some of my favorite people were in the same bus that I just so happened to be in and that it couldn't be real. Then I woke up. Don't you just hate when that happens? Rawr.

Snow Day

I completely ruined those jeans sledding last weekend.

I envy all of you at the equator.

On the upside, 3 snow days last week!

Snow can be so pretty the first day or so, and you love it and never want it to go. Then people start walking in it and it turns to slush and it's FREEZING!!!!! Why is it so cold? WHY???

It's far too cold.

It's good thing I stocked up  on reading material... okay, lots of reading material. It took me FOREVR to get through "In Vogue". It had 400+ pages. Eh. Who Cares. I could read about Vogue all day. 

Dior In Vogue was stunning. I didn't care for Influence too much, I only read the interviewees of the designers or models I liked. I dropped the Anna Wintour book fast because I realized it was an unauthorized bio. If I'm going to study Anna Wintour (she's one of my all time heros), then I'll wait for a Authorized Bio.

Okay, so it's like 20 degrees. Cute coat, or ugly warm coat? I can't decide. What would you wear?
